Below you will find some of our most frequently asked questions categorized by by our various services. If your questions aren’t addressed, please feel free to contact us.

General Questions

How do I place my order?
  • Call the bakery during business hours: Monday-Friday, 6:30am-5:30pm and Saturdays & Sundays, 7:00am-3:00pm.
  • A VIP membership, 50% deposit or full payment is required at the time of order. If paying with EBT, please click here for more information.
  • Two weeks' notice is requested for all special orders; however, call us if needed sooner to discuss how we can accommodate your specific needs.
  • Approval of product is requested at pick up. We are happy to fix anything you are not satisfied with, while at the bakery.
Can I place my order online?

We ask that you place your order by phone (231-726-CAKE or 231-726-2253) so we can clarify the information and ensure accuracy. If you send us an email, we will follow up with a phone call within 48 hours.

Do you require payment or a deposit at the time of order?

Yes, we do ask for full payment at the time of order unless you are a member of our VIP Program. We started asking for pre-payment because of the amount of orders placed and never picked up.  We ask for payment or deposit regardless of the quantity ordered. How far in advance should I place my order?

During the holidays, graduation season or for large orders, we LOVE at least 2 weeks notice but feel free to call and we’ll see how we can accommodate you if you need something sooner. For smaller orders during the “off season”, just let us know within a week to 4 days and we’ll have your order ready for you!

What if I need to change my order or cancel my cake?

Changes to your order or cancellations will be honored at no charge up to one week prior (7 days) to the scheduled pick up date. If less than a week, there will be an additional charge for changes to design, cake sizes, or cancellations up to 50% of the original cost.

Do you require a minimum order on bakery items?

It depends on what you’re ordering. If it’s something we carry in the store on a regular basis, there are no minimum orders. If it’s for cupcakes, breads, rolls, or other products that are made to order or only carried during the holidays, minimum orders apply as we sell by the batch to minimize waste.

Do you offer quantity discounts?

Yes, we offer a $10 dozen doughnut deal all day, every day, and a quantity discount on our Homestyle cookies (if purchasing 4 dozen or more). We are unable to offer quantity discounts on decorated products (cupcakes, pastries, decorated cookies, etc.) because of the time involved to make each one.

Do you ship your products?

Yes we do ship Butter Thin Cookies and 7”, 8” or 9” round cakes. Because our products are fresh and made without preservatives, we typically ship overnight or 2nd day air to ensure quality.

Cakes are fresh frozen after decorating, put in a Polar Tech shipping system with dry ice to ensure quality and freshness. We charge $50 for the shipping system, dry ice and extra handling required to ship a cake. The $50 is in addition to the actual shipping cost and product cost.

Butter Thin Cookies are stuffed with tissue to ensure they arrive in one piece; shrink wrapped and sent out either 2nd day air or 3 day select. Due to the special packing required, we charge an additional $10 plus the actual shipping charges.

My grandmother had a great recipe…can you make that?

As much as we’d love to be able to accommodate every request that we get, our equipment is very large and when we bake anything, we are making 50 gallon batches; which is enough to make 100 cakes! We don’t have equipment at the bakery small enough to make a single cake.

Can you put “pictures” on cakes?

Yes, we can. Please give us one week to process your image. You are welcome to bring your image into the bakery or e-mail your image to info@rykes.com. If pulling images off line, keep in mind that we are subject to copyright law, so we’ll need written permission from the owner of that image to reproduce it for you on your cake.

Any picture provides must be in JPEG format.

I saw this cute Minnie Mouse cake online, can you make it for me?

Yes and possibly, no. Because we are selling our cakes to you, we are bound by Copyright and Trademark Law. This means that any character that is trademarked, like Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, college or company logos and most other characters from popular TV shows and movies are off limits for our bakery to reproduce unless we have written permission from the owner of the copyright or trademark. The reason you see them online is because many of these cakes are being produced by hobby bakers for their families and friends and are not being resold to the public. We are not allowed to make money from someone else’s intellectual property.

We do, however, have a wide variety of “licensed” toys that we can put on your cake. We also have requested permission from many West Michigan High Schools and Colleges to reproduce their logos on our cakes. Please view our list of licensed kits and logos. If what you are looking for is not on our list, feel free to contact that company directly and request written permission. The permission and approved item in a .jpg format can be e-mailed to info@rykes.com. Please include your name and event date in the subject line of the e-mail.

Do you make Sugar Free or Gluten Free baked goods or cakes?

Sadly, we do not make any Sugar or Gluten Free products. We made an attempt, early on, but because we are equipped only for large batches, we had too much waste for the amount of products that were being requested.

Do you use nuts in your products?

Some of our products, like our carrot cake and sweet breads do contain nuts and all of our baked goods are baked in the same kitchen and may not be suitable for individuals with nut allergies.

What is your return policy?

We ask that all products are approved at pick up and due to the nature of our products, we cannot accept returns or issue refunds. However, we want all customers to be 100% satisfied with their Ryke’s Bakery experience. If for some reason you are dissatisfied, please contact the bakery within 24 hours of your purchase and we will do our best to address your concern.

Wedding & Tiered Cakes

When should I place my order?

For spring and summer weddings, it is best to have your order placed by Christmas. For autumn or winter weddings place your order by Easter to ensure availability. Keep in mind that getting appointments during the "Wedding Season", which in West Michigan is May 1st through October 31st, can sometimes be difficult because we are very focused on producing cakes for our current weddings. For this reason, Saturday wedding appointments are only available November 1st through April 30th.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Bring any ideas for the cake design that you have in mind. We have free Wi-Fi at the bakery so we can pull up your Pinterest Boards or feel free to bring pictures from magazines, books, websites, your gown, invitations…anything that inspires you! Be sure to bring along color samples so that the designers can match your cake to your colors. Additionally, be prepared with your deposit. We require a minimum of $50 or 20% down on your cake, whichever is greater, at the end of your consultation.

How big is a Wedding Cake Serving?

At Ryke’s we build tiers that are different sizes; because of that, they are cut differently.

  • A 3” tall tier has two layers of cake, one layer of filling and servings are based on a 1 ½” x 2” x 3” cut.
  • A 4” tall tier has three layers of cake, two layers of filling and servings are based on a 1” x 2” x 4” cut.
  • A 5” tall tier has four layers of cake, three layers of filling and servings are based on a 1” x 2” x 5” cut. Because of the additional layer of cake, 5” tiers have a higher starting cost.
How much will my tiered cake cost?

Any stacked cake starts at $150.00 regardless of how small it is. As a general rule, most cakes serving more than 50 people range from $3 - $7 per serving depending on the design. For budgeting purposes, we recommend multiplying your number of guests by $3.  We will work with you to stay within your budget.  Other costs may include equipment rental, delivery and setup charges.

Why do tiered cakes cost so much?

Tiered cakes require additional time and materials to construct so that the cake doesn’t topple down. Each tier has to be completely level and have an internal structure to secure it. It takes at least 4 to 5 times longer to build, frost and stack a tiered cake than to build a sheet or a round layer cake. Additional time is also needed for the consultation and for artwork. The more detail, colors, materials and hand work required to decorate the cake, the more time it will take; consequently, the more the cake will cost.

Do you make fake cakes?

Yes, we can decorate styrofoam tiers, and this is a great option if you are interested in having the appearance of a larger cake. If your intention is to save money, this is not a great option as the majority of the cost of your wedding cake is in the decorating of the cake and the dummy tiers still have to be decorated. So, by the time you pay for artwork and then order your sheet cakes, it’s basically a “wash”.

What flavors of cake batters can I choose from?

Our classic cake batters include vanilla cream (not white, not yellow), marble or chocolate.

Other specialty flavors include banana, banana nut, cherry chip, funfetti, maple, maple nut, carrot, orange creamsicle and red velvet. We may be able to create other flavors using ingredients that we have on hand. (No matter the flavor, any way you slice it - it's delicious!)

What fillings can I choose from?

Classic fillings include, Bavarian Cream, Chocolate Bavarian Cream, Butter Cream, Lemon, Raspberry, Strawberry, and Chocolate Butter Cream.

Specialty fillings (add $.25 to $1 per serving) include Mint Whip, Piña Colada, Strawberry Bavarian Cream, Chocolate Raspberry Butter Cream, Peanut Butter Bavarian, Peanut Butter Butter Cream, Cream Cheese or add a fruit filling or fresh fruit (in season) to Bavarian Cream to create a fabulous filling.  If you have something else in mind, just ask, because chances are, it's something we can do, using ingredients that we have on hand.

Can I have more than just one flavor of cake or filling?

Yes, every tier can be different. However, it is important to consider how the cake will be served when making the decision about offering more than just one flavor. If the cake is being served buffet style, offer many choices and create a cake or dessert buffet. If the cake is plated and served directly to your guests, offer one choice only to ensure that guests are served quickly.

Can I bring in cakes or other desserts from other sources to compliment our wedding cake?

Yes, as long as you are offering cheesecake or another sweet that we don't offer at our bakery. We ask that all cupcakes, kitchen cakes and sheet cakes come from our bakery as we work very hard to produce an extraordinary product and don't want to confuse guests by giving them something they think came from our bakery which, in reality, did not.

Can I use fresh or silk flowers?

Yes, you are welcome to use fresh or silk flowers. If using silk, bring them to the bakery a minimum of 10 days before your event. If using fresh flowers, simply make arrangements with Ryke's and your florist to place them on the cake after it has been delivered to the reception.

What are groom's cakes and do you make them?

Yes, we absolutely prepare groom's cakes! The groom's cake is an old English tradition where small pieces of cake, generally dark, rich, liquor-saturated fruitcake, were boxed and given to the unmarried female guests to take home and place under their pillow. The myth promised that while sleeping with the cake under her pillow, she would dream of the man she would marry.

This tradition took hold in the southern United States and has slowly migrated to the rest of the country. In the U.S., the groom's cake is usually a chocolate cake decorated to represent the groom's hobbies, career, or with a fun, contemporary design and is often the dessert served after the rehearsal dinner or displayed with the wedding cake. Can I place my wedding cake order via email?

Absolutely! We understand that many of you have moved out of town and are coming home to get married or planning a destination wedding on fabulous Lake Michigan. Complete our Wedding Cake Planning Questionnaire and we’ll get the process started. Email the form along with a photo of what you are thinking. Your photos can be from our website or from any other source.  Our cake artists can do just about anything.

Do you offer tastings?

Yes, we offer one complimentary tasting which consists of our classic vanilla cream cake and fillings. We offer the vanilla cream as it compliments all of our classic filling flavors. Chocolate and marble are available upon request. This tasting is offered during the full consultation when you place your order and put your deposit down.

If you are NOT ready to place your order but would like a tasting, we offer them for $25 by appointment only. If you place your order within 7 days of that tasting, we’ll apply the $25 toward the cost of your cake. If the order isn’t placed, the $25 is non-refundable. As we are a full service bakery, we also have products available in the store every day. Feel free to pop in anytime and purchase a piece of cake, cupcakes, pastries or anything else you may be considering.

Do you deliver wedding cakes?

Yes, we offer delivery within a 60 mile radius North, South and East of Muskegon, Michigan. Delivery costs vary and are based on time and mileage.

If you are outside of our delivery area, we are still happy to make your wedding cake. We have had cakes travel to Wisconsin on the Ferry, Northern Michigan, the Detroit area, Chicago and beyond. Just let us know at the beginning of your consultation so we design a cake that can travel safely to your wedding destination.

Do you ship your wedding cakes?

Yes we can ship 7”, 8” or 9” round Cakes. Because our products are fresh and made without preservatives, we ship overnight or 2nd day air to ensure quality. Cakes are fresh frozen after decorating and put in a Polar Tech shipping system to ensure quality and freshness. Due to the special packing required, a $50 handling fee is charged for EACH cake which includes dry ice and the shipping system. Shipping charges which are based on standard UPS or FedEx rates are additional.

Cupcakes, Mini’s, & More

Do you write on cupcakes?

We can write on cupcakes, but you gotta keep it short! Additional charges will apply.

Can I get special decorations on my cupcakes?

Absolutely – check out our gallery for some of the many beautiful cupcakes our cake artists have created. We are happy to do most anything to your cupcakes. However, depending on the level of difficulty and the amount of time that will be needed to decorate each cupcake, additional charges will apply.

Do you sell cupcake wraps and toppers?

Because there are so many resources and different types of themed parties to be found surfing the web, we only stock a small variety of wraps and toppers. With that being said, we are happy to use any cupcake wrappers or toppers that you bring in to us!

We offer Silver, Black and Gold foil baking cups at no additional charge. Black and Gold baking cups require a minimum of one weeks’ notice.

Do you rent or sell Cupcake Towers?

Yes and Yes! We sell a small cupcake tower that can accommodate up to 25 standard sized cupcakes for $12.99. They are available in White, Black and Silver. Please note that the cupcake towers we sell cannot accommodate a small cake on the top tier.

We also rent cupcake towers that can accommodate 50, 100- 150, and up to 300 cupcakes. Or we recommend www.cupcaketree.com if you’d like to purchase your own.

Do you do wedding cupcakes or special event dessert tables?

Yes! Please email or call us or come in and talk to us about your event and we can create something VERY special for you! If you are renting equipment, an appointment with a wedding cake specialist is recommended. Otherwise any of the retail staff team can assist you with your cupcake order.

How many cupcakes should I order per person?

We recommend one standard size cupcake per person or two minis per person.

How many petit sweets should I order per person?

Generally, one serving is equal to 2.5 “bites”.

Do you offer delivery and set up?

Yes, we do offer delivery and set up. Due to the additional time and staff needed to set up cupcakes and dessert tables, we add an additional $1.00 per piece for set up.

Do you require minimum orders?

Yes we ask for a minimum order of 1 dozen on any cupcakes that are not offered in the store on a daily basis. This applies to minis, special decorations, tinted icings can be ordered by the dozen only. We suggest using colored sugars if you are looking for a variety of colors on smaller orders.

Catering

What is the best way to contact you with questions or to place an order with you?

Email – catering@rykes.com is always best, as our chefs are frequently on the phones, producing for events or off property, setting up and running events. Through email we can ensure that your questions will be responded to in a timely fashion, as they can be handled when the chefs are available. Calls are also welcome. The Bakery and Cafe is open from 6:30am – 5:30pm Monday through Friday and Saturdays & Sundays from 7:00am – 3:00pm. If a chef is unavailable to take your call, please leave a message.

How far in advance should I place my catering order?

Michigan’s “event” season begins May 1st and ends January 1st. If your event is planned during this time period, the more notice you can provide, the better. We typically start booking Saturday events during this time period one to one and a half years in advance.  Events are booked on a first come first served basis so plan early.

We can accommodate more limited menus for boxed or catered lunches with a minimum of 48 hours’ notice or the café menu is always available. Again, the earlier we are contacted, the better able we are to accommodate your specific menu requirements.

Do you require payment or a deposit at the time of order?

Yes, we do require a deposit to secure your event date.  Deposits vary depending on the size and scope of your event. Your deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable.

We accept all major credit cards but offer a discount for cash or checks. ALL quotes are based on payment with cash, check or cashier’s check. The non-discounted price for credit or debit cards is an additional  3%.

When is my final balance due?

We will finalize your menu and review the event plan 30 days before your event. Your final guest count is requested 14 days before your event along with your final payment due 7 days prior to your event. Your event cost is based on payment with cash, check or cashier’s check. Credit or Debit cards will be charged an additional 3%.

When is my final guest count due?

A  table layout and the Event Timing Worksheet must be received 30 days prior to your event. Final count is due 14 days before your event. Keep in mind that the price per person will increase if guest count decreases by more than 10%. Click here to fill out the Event Timing Worksheet.

Your final payment is due 7 days prior to the event.  We are always able to increase your guest count at this time but unable to decrease your count due to products that have been ordered.

Do you offer tastings?

Yes, we offer tastings by appointment. The tasting consists of a variety of salads and appetizers that are offered in our café on a daily basis. The intent of the tasting is to give you a taste of how we use flavors to create a fabulous menu for you. The tasting is NOT designed for you to actually try out the menu you are planning for your event. Handling tastings this way enables you to get a feel for what we do and it enables us to keep prices lower for your event. We are happy to provide you with a list of very satisfied customers to contact should you have additional questions following your complimentary tasting.

Do you create custom menus?

Yes, please contact Chef Adam (catering@rykes.com) to specifically design a menu that’s right for you.

Do you offer discounts if we purchase our cake and catering through Ryke’s?

We offer complimentary delivery and set up of the wedding cake if both the catering and cake is purchased from Ryke’s. (Up to a $50 value)

Do you offer vegetarian/vegan options?

Yes, we can offer a variety of vegetarian and vegan options.

Do you charge cake-cutting fees?

Yes, we offer this as an option at $1.00 per serving. The $1.00 covers the cost of the plates, napkins, forks, servers, etc..  We offer you the choice of utilizing this service so that you can be in control of your budget. Keep in mind that if you choose to cut the cake yourself, you will also need to provide the plates, forks, napkins, etc.

Can you provide tables, chairs, linens and other rental items?

Yes, we can offer linens. Ask for referrals to provide additional rental services.

For corporate catering, do you accommodate last minute orders?

We prefer 48 hours notice for all orders to ensure product availability. However, we will always do our best to accommodate last minute orders, so please contact us.
