Mother’s Day is May 10!!
Monday May 04th 2009, 10:30 am

Are you still thinking….what should I get for Mom this year for Mother’s Day??  Why not some goodies from Ryke’s?

Our Italian Quiche and assorted Danishes would make a wonderful breakfast for Mom.  And buy some fresh roasted coffee beans from Schuil Coffee to make the meal complete!

A tray of goodies for Mom to nibble on would be a great surprise.  Princess Di Pastries, Chocolate Cake Truffles and our signature Pecan Diamonds are a wonderful treat!

Perhaps the best surprise of all for Mom would be your own artwork on a cake.  That’s right!  You or your children can design Mom’s cake!!  Using bright colors and your imagination - design a message on an 8-1/2 x 11 piece of paper.

Bring your masterpiece into the bakery and order Mom’s cake.  We will then scan your artwork into our computer and print the image on sugar paper - creating an edible image.  We can do this for just $7 added to the price of your cake.  Stop in today and make magic happen!

Hoodie Hoo Day!!??

Filed under: Holidays...Lots of Holidays, The Crazy *@!% We Come Up With

I know what you’re thinking….What’s Hoodie Hoo Day? It is a holiday celebrated in the Northern Hemisphere on February 20. This observance has an interesting hook. It’s filled with hoopla and causes a real hoop-de-doo. It’ll have you dancin’ a hootchie-kootchie as if you were hoofin’ it at a hootenanny!

Seriously, Hoodie Hoo Day is an invitation to Spring. In an effort to chase away the Winter blues and get Spring to feel welcome, folks dress in warm weather gear, step outside at high noon, wave their hands overhead and yell “Hoooooooodie Hoooooooo!”. Even if you don’t give a hoot about Spring or think that this sounds like a lot of hooey, by hook or by crook get yourself to Ryke’s on Friday, February 20 by 12:00 noo-hoon. But…I digress.

At this time of year, most people are eager to see the snow melt and sun shine again. Ryke’s is happy to celebrate all of the unusual and joyous moments in life. They have celebrated such things as Talk Like a Pirate Day and Be Bald and Be Free Day - why not Hoodie Hoo Day? Owners Butch and Renee Rouwhorst and their staff invite you to join in the fun. Don’t be a hooligan and play hookey to join the hoo ha and end up in the hoosegow. So, whether you’re a Hoosier, a hoodlum or Hootie and the Blowfish, throw on your favorite hoodie and hoof it on down to Ryke’s Bakery, Catering and Cafe. I apologize. I, once again, got carried away.

Ryke’s Bakery, Catering and Cafe, located at 1788 Terrace Street at Laketon Avenue in Muskegon, invite you to join them for the celebration of Northern Hemisphere Hoodie Hoo Day on Friday, February 20. From 11am-1pm, you can enjoy a free fountain beverage with any lunch purchase. At high noon, staff and patrons alike will be encouraged to step outside, wave their arms overhead and bid farewell to Winter with a hardy “Hoooooodie Hoooooooo!”. For more information visit Ryke’s on the web at www.rykes.com.

It would behoove you to join in the hoopla. (sorry)

Help feed your neighbors! National Food Bank Week!
Friday October 17th 2008, 9:23 am

October 19-25 is National Food Bank Week. In honor of this we are collecting non-perishable food and toiletry items for the Bethany Church Food Pantry, right in our neighborhood. This food pantry serves the needs of the McLaughline Neighborhood. To encourage participation, we are offering a special package of Ryke’s Butter Thins to anyone who contributes. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY!

You may be thinking….I don’t live in the McLaughlin Neighborhood. These aren’t my neighbors. Aren’t they?

Do you remember when you were a kid andyour neighborhood was your whole world? Everthing you needed was within a one mile radius of your home. Your friends, your grocery store, your babysitter, your playground….everything! The world has changed alot. Neighborhood groceries have turned into giant supermarkets, thesprawling of school districts has spread out our friends network, the “invention” of malls and Chuck E. Cheese have created an entirely different sort of playground and the internet has redefined the term “neighbor”. We now live in a “global neighborhood”.

In light of our current economic strife across the country, more families are in need of assistance than have been since the Great Depression. Word is buzzing that the coffers of food pantries are at an all-time low as they enter into their busiest season. Suggested items include: canned meats, canned tuna, macaroni & cheese, packaged dinners, peanut butter, canned soup and toiletries.

Ryke’s Bakerywas born in the midst of the Great Depression, another time of great need. John Ryke was finding it hard to make ends meet. He decided tostart producing a family recipe for butter cookies in his kitchen with his children selling them door to door in their wagon. Much has changed since then, but the recipe for the famous Ryke’s Butter Thins remains the same and the bakery has always made its home in the McLaughlin Neighborhood.Ryke’s current location is less than one block from the original Ryke family home.

So, from October 20 through October 25, bring in your contribution to the Bethany Church Food Pantry to Ryke’s and get your special package of Butter Thins in appreciation. This event is just one of many unconventional holidays and observances that Ryke’s celebrates each month. We want it to be fun for customers when they come in and fun for our employees as they spend their day here.

Our business hours at Ryke’s are Mondays-Fridays 6:30am-5:30pm and Saturdays7:00am-3:00pm. We are located at 1788 Terrace at the corner of Laketon in Muskegon. Decorate a cake and take it home!

Filed under: The Crazy *@!% We Come Up With

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to decorate a cake like the artists at Ryke’s? Sure, you have! On Friday, October 10 you’ll get your chance to give it a shot. On National Cake Decorating Day Ryke’s Bakery, Catering and Cafe is offering up the opportunity for you to decorate a cake….and maybe even take it home with you!

Cakes have been baked and decorated at Ryke’s for 70 years. Generations of Muskegonites have spent countless birthdays and holidays with a Ryke’s cake on their table. The cakes are always delicious and beautifully decorated. Your place in the life of that cake has always been at the end. You and your loved ones are simply there to orchestrate the cake’s demise. How wonderful to be a part of its creation! This is your chance.

From 11am-1pm on Friday, October 10, three cakes will be displayed in the store at Ryke’s. Each customer will be invited to don an attractive hairnet and gloves and add one design element to the cake of their choice then choose to enter the drawing to win that cake! At 1pm, a winner’s name will be drawn for each cake.

This day of Cake Decorating is just a part of the daily fun and promotions that Ryke’s celebrates each month. Haven’t you always wanted to rejoice in being left-handed (August 11) or win a free donut for telling an old joke (July 24) or even show the world that you are bald and proud of it (October 14)? You can at Ryke’s. Visit Ryke’s and pick up a Daily Promotions Calendar, along with a Soup and Wraps Calendar for their Cafe. You may find it very amusing to commemorate Ball Point Pen Day (June 10)!

Come on in and join the party!!

What would VP cookies look like?
Friday October 03rd 2008, 12:20 pm
Filed under: Great American Cookie Poll

So did everyone catch the VP debate last night? Interesting folks, aren’t they? Both of them are focused on family. They’ve both had personal challenges to overcome. There are differences, of course.

Biden has been a dedicated public servant for Delaware in the US Senate since 1972. He has served as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Caucus on International Narcotic Control. He has also served on several subcommittees including Crime and Drugs, Human Rights and the Law and Immigration, Border Security and Refugees.

Palin, on the other hand, has only been in politics for 16 years. She first entered as a city council member in Wasilla, Alaska running on the platform of wanting to make sure tax money wasn’t being wasted.  She rose to mayor in 1996, becoming one of the highest paid mayors in the nation. Palin jumped on the fast track ~ became governor in 2006 and now….. So, she went from mayor of a small city of 6,000 to one heartbeat away from the most powerful position on earth in just two years!!! Whew! I’m surprised she hasn’t broken her neck from the speed!

So how does all of this translate to baked goods? Well, what, do you suppose, Vice Presidential cookies would look like? I have a theory! (I know, you’re shocked!) I believe the Biden cookie would be quite thick, full of a variety of ingredients, well-baked, perhaps a little crispy from it’s length in the oven….In fact, it may even be closer to a biscuit. Warm…seems overdone….but delicious and very satisfying.

On the other hand, a Palin cookie would be made of only two or three ingredients, hastily prepared leaving the batter quite lumpy, and baked at a high temperature for a very short time. What you’re left with is a very thin, bland cookie, burnt around the edges but runny on the inside. Hot…interesting at first….but tasteless and not fulfilling in the least.

Food for thought.
